OP-Pohjola Group and S-Asunnot Oy to Make a Major Investment in Kalasatama in Helsinki

OP-Pohjola Group will make a major property investment in a residential block in Kalasatama, Helsinki. Implemented in cooperation with S-Asunnot Oy, this "Kotikortteli" development project is aimed at creating a sustainable urban structure.

- We have been actively involved in developing this "Kotikortteli" concept and this block will become a high-quality residential area combining extensive services, good connections, the sea and the vicinity of the central city area, says Erkko Ryynänen, Managing Director of OP Bank Group Pension Fund.

Laying the cornerstone for Kotikortteli Kalasatama will mark the beginning of housing construction in Kalasatama. The first residential building of the seven buildings in the block will be completed in early 2013. The block will have, for example, owner-occupied flats, privately-financed rented flats, retirement homes and social rented housing. In addition, a community house for recreational activities will be built in Kalasatama.

- The area will also be suitable for senior citizens. The diverse age structure in the area will make Kotikortteli Kalasatama a kind of a small, lively urban village, explains Esa Fagerlund, Managing Director of S-Asunnot Oy.

The project will pay special attention to ecological housing in terms of energy solutions and waste disposal. The buildings will be categorised as energy efficiency class A with respect to both the district heating and cooling networks, and waste disposal is based on a specific waste recycling system for various types of waste. A garage in the city block will also have two electric cars and chargers available for use by the dwellers. In addition, there are plans to establish a variety of small street-level shops in the area.
