1. Do some refresher obedience training. Whether on your own or guided by
a trainer, set aside time to reinforce the fundamentals, such as voice
commands.
2. Scout a new route every day for a different 30-minute walk. Your dog
will be thrilled by the variety.
3. Arrange a play date for your dog with friends or neighbors. This can
help establish social skills.
4. Set up an agility course and give it a try. All dogs enjoy mental and
physical challenges.
5. Go through your dog's old stuff and consider donating the items to a
rescue or animal shelter.
6. Drop your dog off for an active day of doggie day care. You both will
enjoy some "me" time.
7. Take your dog to one of the area dog parks. Be alert and attentive at
all times.
8. Take a hike with your dog. Getting away from the pavement can be an
important bonding experience.
9. Look into getting your dog certified as a therapy dog. The process is
simple and, once certified, you and your dog can brighten someone's day
with visits to hospitals and nursing homes.
10. If you are leaving town, let your dog have a vacation while you're
away. Board your dog somewhere that emphasizes play and activity.
Marr encourages owners to continuously seek to incorporate activities that
provide fun opportunities for exercise and mental challenges into a dog's
daily routine. These can boost the relationship, reduce boredom and lessen
the chances that a dog will have behavior problems.
