DETROIT, Jan. 16, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- From January 16-22, Marygrove College will honor the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme for the 2008 Martin Luther King Week Celebration is: one community, one society, one humanity. All activities planned for the week are intended to communicate his messages of unity to the campus and the community surrounding Marygrove. All activities are free and open to the public.
Lewis Colson, president of United Block Clubs Association and a member of the MLK Planning Committee at Marygrove, said it well: "For many people, Martin Luther King Day is a day off. We at Marygrove are going to make it a day ON!"
In keeping with the College's mission of fostering Urban Leadership, Marygrove will engage the neighborhood surrounding its campus on McNichols and Wyoming in northwest Detroit in a call to action.
* The Marygrove Library will have a week-long Civil Rights Timeline Display beginning January 16. * On Thursday and Friday, January 17 and 18, at noon, the uplifting and challenging movie "ONE" will be shown in the Marygrove Theatre. * On Monday, January 21, beginning at 9 a.m., Marygrove students and family members will participate in a service project at St. Dominic Outreach Center on West Warren east of Trumbull in Detroit. Volunteers may park at St. Dominic's Church, 4844 Trumbull. * At 1 p.m. that day, the Marygrove community and residents of the surrounding neighborhood will march around the perimeter of the campus to celebrate freedom and unity. Marygrove will also be the site of a non-perishable items collection, including canned or dry goods or personal hygiene items, for the poor. It is the first- ever Marygrove Freedom March. * Tuesday, January 22, will feature "The Words of MLK: How They Inform My Decisions to Improve My Urban Community": A Campus/Community Dialog. Beginning at 12 p.m. in the Madame Cadillac Building's Alumni Hall, panelists will discuss the ways in which Martin Luther King, Jr.'s writings impact a commitment to keeping his legacy alive. * The week culminates in a keynote address, "The Mobilization Challenge: Keeping the MLK Dream Alive," on Wednesday, January 23. At 12 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, Sacred Heart Chapel, John Ambrose, Marygrove Dean of Students and a minister at Liberty Temple Baptist Church will deliver the keynote address.
